Are You a Smoker?  Do You Want to Quit?

Why do you want to quit?
Each of us has our own reasons for wanting to stop smoking.
These include knowing that you are putting poisons into your body and that eventually the accumulation of these toxins will affect your health and the quality of your life in a negative way.

It’s not rocket science. If you put poisons into your body, something has got to happen eventually. Statistics show that smokers die younger and have a higher rate of cancers and other life threatening and debilitating illnesses.

Some people want to quit because they are fed up with being controlled by their addiction to nicotine. It rules their lives. And of course, it’s becoming much more difficult to be a smoker in today’s world.

"When patterns are broken, new worlds emerge."  - Tuli Kupferberg

Why don’t you quit?

Cravings. Your body has not only got used to having cigarette smoke come in, it now wants it to come in. When your body wants some more nicotine, it lets you know through those cravings. If you don’t bring the nicotine in, you can get quite irritable.

Scared?
You are scared. You have come to use smoking to help you cope with all sorts of things – being stressed, needing to relax, giving yourself some time to yourself, you use it as a reward. It might have even come to be your best friend. It can be a bit of a worry, wondering how you will be able to be a non-smoker. What will you do?

Habit
You have the automatic behaviour of a smoker. You do it without thinking most of the time.

" Life is always at some turning point "  - Irwin Edmond

Deep addiction
The addiction to nicotine is considered by many experts to be as deep as the addiction to heroin. Some experts say that for some people it is the most addictive substance.

A common pattern for people quitting is to stop for a while and then start up again. When this happens you can feel a bit of a failure, you can begin to believe that you really can’t live without it. You may even begin to make statements about yourself like, “I have an addictive personality.”

Those of us who work at helping people overcome their addiction to nicotine see this positively. We know you now have an experience of what it is like to be a non-smoker. We can help you make those periods so long that you never smoke again.

Making body changes
Your body has got used to having nicotine and the other chemicals in cigarette smoke coming in. It has to make some changes so it gets back to functioning as a non-smoker once again. It does this relatively easily once those cravings have gone.

" The one unchangeable certainty is that nothing is certain or unchangeable."  - John F Kennedy
